Reasons to Love the French
After more than a decade of living and designing interiors in Paris, I can say—without hesitation—I love everything French.
The language, the astonishing wine, the delights of French cuisine—and, most enduringly, the French lifestyle and culture, the way of life that the French embody with such conviction and complexity.
I’ve shared this sentiment many times, and it often earns me a raised eyebrow or a knowing smile—usually both. Enthusiasm, after all, is approached with a certain restraint here. But I’ve come to understand that gesture for what it truly is: curiosity, subtle humor, and perhaps even a touch of mutual understanding.
Because, despite the occasional cultural differences—those moments when temperament or rhythm diverge—I’ve come to admire the French even more for it.
1. They Feel Everything—Deeply and Honestly
I must admit, even after all these years, I remain endlessly charmed by the French—even when our cultural differences occasionally reveal themselves in small, everyday ways.
There are moments, of course, when I sense a certain formality, a touch of reserve, or a fleeting impatience that contrasts with my own temperament. But I’ve come to see these not as flaws, but as facets of a cultural identity rooted in precision, pride, and passion.
In fact, that complexity is part of what I love most. The French can be both critical and affectionate in the same breath. They question, debate, and refine—but always with depth. Even in contradiction, there’s conviction. And that, to me, is beautifully, authentically French culture.
2. They’ve Perfected the Art of Slowing Down
One of the most distinct aspects of French life is its reverence for rhythm.
There’s a noticeable calm in the way the French move through their daily routine—meals are never rushed, conversations unfold without pressure, and spending time is treated as something to be savored rather than chased.
As someone with a naturally driven, let’s-get-it-done approach, I initially found this pace unfamiliar. But over time, I’ve come to respect—deeply—the peace it brings, a quiet reminder of what slow living in France can offer. While I continue to uphold efficiency and excellence in my work and remain unwavering in my commitment to service, I’ve also learned to protect the quiet moments.
The slower rhythm of the French way of life allows space to enjoy—to observe, to think, to live—a true expression of joie de vivre. And in that space, I’ve found not only more pleasure, but also more clarity. I’ve discovered that it’s entirely possible to enjoy life with ease and still get things done with elegance. I’ve become, in many ways, a master of this quiet balance—a kind of everyday magic that allows me to move between purpose and pause.
And perhaps just as importantly, I’ve found—and remain loyal to—those who share this approach. Collaborators who embrace both structure and soul, who honor craftsmanship without rushing it, and who understand that real high quality takes time. These partnerships are rare, and when you find them, they are a treasure.
3. They Live Beautifully—Without Trying Too Hard
French style, whether in fashion or interiors, carries an air of quiet confidence.
There’s no need to impress. There’s simply a deep-rooted understanding of what feels right. In a typical Paris apartment design, you might find antique parquet floors, modern art, a vintage mirror, and a well-worn linen sofa—all coexisting with graceful ease.
It’s not about decoration. It’s about atmosphere. About creating a space that reflects who you are, not who you aspire to be, an effortless expression of French style in interiors. And that effortless chic—the kind that can’t be manufactured, an expression of effortless French style—is something the French do better than anyone.
4. They Honor the Past While Embracing the Present
Nowhere is the balance between heritage and modernity more elegant than in France.
Whether restoring a Haussmann apartment or redesigning a country retreat, the essence of Parisian interior design reflects this French instinct for preservation. They understand that beauty lies in what endures. A bit of wear, a sense of time, a respect for craftsmanship—these are not considered flaws, but virtues.
Even as they embrace contemporary living, they do so with a reverence for history. The result? Interiors that are layered, storied, and deeply human.

Over the years, I’ve learned so much from this country and life in France—not just as a designer, but as a human being.
To slow down. To edit. To feel deeply. To indulge without guilt. To live well in small, meaningful ways. The French have taught me that design isn’t just visual—it’s visceral. It’s emotional. It’s personal.
